Per @Paul Lawson ,
Dr. Thomas Kline of the CAW says the number of people who have the genetic disposition for opioid addiction (as opposed to dependence) is 0.5%. He claims that the per capita opioid (primarily heroin) addiction is the same as it was 100 years ago according to accepted documentation.
Presuming this is accurate addiction is simply a side effect for 0.5% of the population and should be dealt with appropriately just as any serious medication side effect experienced by someone taking any drug. All drugs come with risks and if you read the insert for any given drug you'll be disturbed by the amount and severity of risks for most any given drug and death often shows up as a possible risk. Drug prohibition doesn't help anyone.
Humans have been using drugs for many thousands of years and they always will. Addicts seek out the drug/s they're addicted to regardless of the consequences. That's very much the definition of addiction from a behavioral perspective.
As a country we need to move away from drug prohibition (we SHOULD know better as alcohol prohibition didn't work and caused MANY more problems), and deal with reality in a healthy and productive manner rather than continue with the clearly failed "drug war". Prohibition causes major crime, incarcerates people that shouldn't be, deprives the population from therapeutic drugs and dehumanizes the species.
How many more must die? How many more criminal cartels do we encourage to flourish and how many more people do we punish for being human? The time for change is NOW. Encourage legislators to become educated on this most important issue and set in motion a more positive approach to drug and medication issues because what we have now clearly is bad for the country and humanity in general.
Chronically Human
